Inspired by the theme of sexuality and my interest in church architecture, I started painting Cobaltica 1 without a clear vision of its style or meaning; this became clearer as the painting developed. The gradual synthesis of both these concerns gave me an instinctive understanding that there could be erotic references in religious architecture, interior design and decorative ornamentation. I decided to create a diptych with a second painting using the same colours and abstract language.
